Norman Speight appears to have it right in that the devices shown may serve other devices wirelessly, but they are wired to a router or some other device. Like Speight says, how about a truely wireless hard disk?

It doesn't surprise me, their support is outsourced and prob more undereducated than tech savvy consumers. The link I pasted last comment is from Roku forums, which are frequented by "tech savvy consumers", in most cases. In addition other posts show that it's rumored that Roku is currently inking a deal with google to put up a YouTube channel. If that's true, they wouldn't want to tell people you can get YouTube through a third party channel (besides the fact they're probably not smart enough to know about it).

Companies tell you what they want you to know. Microsoft doesn't tell you that with any valid Windows license you can install Windows on Linux legally (without a dual boot) using "VirtualBox" by Sun (free software) - but you can still do it.

Thanks for the reply although its a bit late for that. Roku already has the unit I sent them and we have (what's left) of the money we sent them. Also, that's pretty odd that you say YouTube can be accessed on Roku. Roku's "customer service" people flat-out said YouTube could not be accessed.

Actually, this blog isn't written by anyone affiliate with Roku - and we've been online for 10 years now. All reviews are written by - ME! I'm always happy to publish comments like this because I want people to get real world experiences. Personally we have now not one, not two, but THREE Roku's in our house, and we're VERY happy with all 3. We watch a lot of things on the computer, but the Roku's are used for Hulu Plus and Netflix mainly. I don't know why your credit card wouldn't work with either service - but that really has nothing to do with the ROKU at all. Use a different card or something - if it were a widespread issue then both Netflix and Hulu would be screaming at Roku about it. We also use our Roku's a LOT for Amazon on Demand. I've never had to use Roku support - because all 3 devices "just work". Does third support surprise me? No, it's the same thing Dell, Microsoft, Intuit, and nearly all other companies have.

Also, we love the diversity of channels on Roku - and as I said in my review I even play blackjack on it. IT IS POSSIBLE to view YouTube on Roku, you just have to install a channel:

With a little googling you might find some of your other video providers are available through apps as well.

We bought a ROKU XD box about a month ago. It took three days to come to the realization that we wasted our money on a silly, overhyped POS. Our experience with their free channels is the same as you might expect to get with basic cable or satellite: 300 channels of garbage. "No problem, " we said, "we'll get Hulu Plus and Netflix!"

Ahem.

Nope. For reasons known only to Hulu and Netflix, neither site would accept our credit card so we were never able to access those program streams. (Funny! ROKU didn't have any problems with our credit card!)

Roku doesn't access YouTube, Google video, Loombo, Megavideo, Frogmovz, Karimbavidz or any of the other streaming sites we normally access through our computers. Heck, it doesn't even get free Hulu!

Any telephone call is outsourced to some alien planet where they just barely speak anything even resembling English so it was quite a chore trying to explain to the being on the other end of the line that we wanted to send the unit back for a refund. I finally made myself understood and so back it went. (Oh, and guess who pays for return shipping?)

We are quite satisfied to watch what we want when we want on our computer. As far as we are concerned, the Roku device is a bunch of horse droppings. We are frankly baffled by all the glowing praises Roku is getting. Must be Roku employees paid to post all this stuff.

This router rules for external connections with its ability to handle USB drives and do bittorrent and FTP in the background. However for internal connects or any gamers' network you will want a 1 gigabit wired router capable of teaming and USB 3.0 ports. ASUS *must* be shipping this soon because they already ship motherboards with teamed (2 ports acting as one) gigabit and two USB 3.0 ports, and sell cards with 2 USB 3.0 ports. So it's irritating that their best product for external is useless for internal. I don't want 100-300 mbps wireless-N for gaming I want TWO GIGABITS WITH NO INTERFERENCE, and I don't want to access the downloaded files at the speed they downloaded, I want a 4.8gbps USB 3.0 SSD accessed by two game boxes at once (each with teamed gigabit connections) at nearly its full speed.

That's what EVERY GEEK WANTS, NOW! <-- pay attention, ASUS, and refresh this product line.

Thank you SO much for writing this review! Often the reviews for things are just CNET, ZDNet, and price comparison sites (or worse - Best Buy, etc. It's often hard to find an honest review of someone that actually bought the product. I'm glad I read it, and now since I bought the Asus - I have to say I agree with you, best wireless n router ever!
